North Branch Construction Celebrates Melanie Smith during Women in Construction Week

North Branch Construction celebrates Melanie Smith and all women in construction, not only during the National Association for Women In Construction (NAWIC)'s 'Women in Construction Week', but every day!

Melanie is a Project Superintendent with 15 years of experience in the construction industry. Her role in construction is very important as she is the primary eyes and ears for the day-to-day operations and supervision of a jobsite. Construction projects don’t always go as planned, so being flexible and adaptable, as well as a good problem solver, are important qualities in a Project Superintendent. Melanie is happiest when she is learning and solving problems, so a career in construction has been a great fit for her. She also loves seeing spaces transform, whether it’s a renovation or turning an empty lot into a new building, and everything in between.

Melanie is greatly inspired by her grandfather and his determined work ethic. At 90 years old, he still works as a carpenter part-time, passing on his knowledge to younger generations of carpenters. If she was to give one piece of advice to girls and young women interested in pursuing a career in construction, Melanie would say, “Be open to opportunities. Not every position in construction requires you to get your hands dirty, but you might love the ones that do. Dive in, get your hands dirty, and ask questions along the way. You will have no idea if you like it if you don’t try.”

The focus of Women in Construction Week, taking place from March 3-9, 2019, is to highlight women as a visible component of construction, while raising awareness of the opportunities available and emphasizing the growing role of women in the industry.
