Job Well-Done Amelia, Joel, and Shayne!
Congratulations and a job well-done to North Branch carpenters, Amelia DeVellis, Joel Chrisman, and Shayne Carruthers for their work on moving the “Never Forget” Memorial, firefighter’s last call bell and flagpole patio at Londonderry Fire Department. Despite no previous experience in landscape construction, Amelia, Joel, and Shayne got together and learned the skills they needed to move this important memorial site honoring the department’s fallen heroes.
The patio design includes a walkway to the memorial area in the shape of the Maltese Cross, also known as the fire fighters badge of honor, signifying that he works in courage…a ladder rung away from death. The center of the brick emblem area includes a center circle with bricks engraved with the names of fallen Londonderry Department firefighters. A granite stone with a plaque calls attention to “Members of the Londonderry Fire Department Who Have Answered Their Last Alarm.”
Also included is the firefighter’s last call bell, commemorating a time when the fire bell rang to call firefighters to an alarm and then, again, to signal that the alarm had ended. Today, the ringing of the bell is the final event after a firefighter’s funeral that announces a comrade has come home for that final time.
At the top of the patio are three individual flag poles to fly the flags of the United States, New Hampshire, and Fire Fighters flags.
