Green & Sustainable

North Branch Construction was involved in implementing construction of sustainable designed projects long before “green construction” was a common term dating back to the 1960’s.

In 1997, North Branch completed construction of its first official “Energy Crafted Home” in Bedford, NH, which also qualified (scoring 90.4 out of 100) for the EPA Energy Star designation as well. It was one of the first in the state for a home of this size (30,000 sq. ft.).  This home featured:

  • A geothermal heat pump system supplied with water from a 3 million gallon man-made pond
  • 84 KW wind generator
  • Double exterior walls with foam insulation
  • 500,000 BTU Heating, 50 tons cooling, 33 fan coil units
  • Radiant slab heat for excess energy storage

Since that time, we have completed numerous projects which in total have earned hundreds of thousands of dollars in Energy Star rebates for our clients (ranking us 2nd in the state by EPA Energy Star). Sustainable construction is more than just saving energy; it’s an environmentally responsible design and construction philosophy. Several of our completed projects include:

  • Wood from Managed Forests
  • Daylight Harvesting
  • Water Conservation (including toilets, faucets and waterless urinals)
  • Recycling of Construction Waste
  • Utilizing Recycled Materials in the Design
  • Solar Heat and Hot Water
  • Wind Power
  • High Efficiency Lighting and Control
  • Geothermal Well Drilling for Heating and Cooling

Whether an Owner chooses to pursue LEED for any particular project or not, North Branch Construction’s extensive sustainable construction and LEED experience allows us to evaluate all building programs from a practical, long-term operating cost perspective, oftentimes resulting in “smart choices” that lower both initial capital construction costs as well as on-going annual cost savings for the life of the building. North Branch Construction has three LEED Accredited Professionals on-staff to assist in evaluating all of our projects, whether the client chooses to participate in the formal LEED Certification process or not.
