North Branch Construction was chosen from a group of six GC’s as Construction Manager for the new East Wheelock St. Dormitory Cluster at Dartmouth College. After being awarded the project in early November, North Branch began to pre-qualify subcontractors to bid on the project. A few major trades were brought on board in April (based on preliminary construction drawings), while the majority of subcontracts were awarded in June, based on 95% completed drawings. North Branch provided Dartmouth College with a GMP at that time. Construction on the new, 80 bed, $6.2 million facility, designed by Atkin, Olshin, Lawson-Bell Architects of Philadelphia, PA, began in April with the demolition of an existing garage. In addition, underground electric and a chiller servicing the surrounding buildings (running through the new foundation site) had to be relocated. By August, the basement foundation and first floor precast concrete plank was in place and the underground infrastructure (including new sewer lines, storm sewer lines and catch basins, as well as a new steam line to replace an existing one that cut through the new building’s foundation) was complete. The building was topped off with the roof in early December. Construction was completed on schedule and under the GMP. The new four story dormitory features student bedrooms arranged in suites and will house both male and female students on its four floors and is nestled between other existing dormitories. The new facility is also linked to the existing Wheelock Cluster with both open and enclosed walkways. The dormitory has been named McCulloch Hall in honor of Trustee Emeritus Norman (Sandy) E. McCulloch, Jr. in appreciation of his years of dedicated service to Dartmouth College. At the 2000 Associated Builders and Construction Excellence in Construction Awards, North Branch was honored to receive the Excellence in Construction Award in the Institutional Over $2 Million category for the McCulloch Hall Project.
